This would be a perfect topic to continue in the <a href="http://devgrow.com/discuss">Discussion Forums</a>, actually. I agree with you in that it doesn't take much to implement a "simple, clean functional interface" - however that definition can cover anything from a basic, CSS-less HTML form to something much more complicated in terms of coding. While I do think functionality overall trumps design in most cases, a strong interface can go a long way in creating conversions and improving usability. A functional but poorly designed (esp. in terms of layout) website can indeed break a business, which is why I suggest developers to have a basic understanding of design too.

Anyways, feel free to post a topic about this in the discussion forums if you'd like!

"it is one of the bigger factors that can help make or break your business. To be a successful, self-reliant and cost-effective developer, having a basic understanding of design will be a crucial asset."

The above statements are what I'm talking about. It doesn't take much, if any skill to implement the simple, clean functional interface that we do agree on.
Additionally, with all of the easy to use content management systems, WYSIWYG HTML editors and website design templates that are available today, a monkey could a have very adequate and functional website. I can't tell you how many of our clients are so called "web designers", that don't have clue about what is actually required to build a website. Kudos on the article though. I just think any web developer will have the same or similar opinion as I have just stated.

Hey Rick, thanks for commenting. I don't think I completely understand what we're disagreeing on - my article did not suggest overwhelming graphics, Flash or other elements. Rather, the point of the article was to suggest methods and practices that can help hone your sense of design and usability.

I completely agree that a simple, clean and functional design can go a long way, it's definitely a proven concept. To understand what that design entails, however, does require a lot of research and practice. The suggestions I've made can only help with that goal.

I completely disagree with the premise of your article. All design elements of a website are, for the most part, a matter of opinion, add very little value to your site and in many cases can be detrimental to the usability and functionality of your website.

Take a hint from the leaders, Google, FaceBook, YouTube, Microsoft, eBay, Twitter, you name it. Any website that is developed to serve many users successfully will have a very simple, clean and functional design without overwhelming graphics, Flash or other page elements that do nothing other than consume valuable server resources and annoy many of your users.
