Video of New Feature in Photoshop CS5: Content-Aware Fill

Just came across this on HN and it looks incredibly exciting – a feature in the upcoming version of Photoshop that allows you to fill spaces seamlessly and intelligently. The video highlights using it for removing unwanted artifacts (instead of using the spot healing tool) and patching large chunks of an image. It looks like it can be a bit CPU intensive when calculating larger areas, however achieving the same effect manually would take much, much longer.

Of note, this immediately brought back memories of PatchMatch, a patching algorithm created by researchers from Princeton and Adobe Advanced Technology Labs. Check out the video below:

Update: New Video!

Here is a new video of the new Content-Aware fill that just surfaced on YouTube (thanks Matt!):

No joke, it’s almost magic! I am curious though as to the exact quality of the patching, it’s hard to see detail in the YouTube video.

      • Mohammad

True, but even if it’s not perfect, it still saves loads of time in the end
